Violet (Monica Keena) and Rosie (Daisy Eagan) are 15-year-old fraternal twin sisters on the edge of womanhood. When their parents are killed in a car crash the girls hit the road as "outlaws" bound for Kentucky and he perfect life together. Quickly they meet Pete (Gordon) Currie) a cute handyman living at a local military base. The three set up house. Violet embraces her desires and begins sleeping with Pete. Rosie represses sexual urges turning to guns and dangerous play to impress the local recruits. Their childhood bond is shattered in a shocking and unforgettable chain of events.System Requirements: Running Time 93 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: R UPC: 031398172659 Manufacturer No: 17265
Viewer Reviews Because of the implausible story, the underdevelopment of the characters, and the lurid handling of the subject matter, this film is easily dismissed -- and many have done just that. However, that is to miss the point. This movie is a modern fairy tale, and like many great fairy tales it is implausible, lurid, and thin in character development. Like a fairy tale, Ripe has a moral purpose, though who really cares about that? Little Red Riding Hood tempts us more towards the forest than wards us away from it, whatever the intent is. Fairy tales endure because they bring our dreams into the waking world. Ripe certainly has a dreamlike quality. The empty, corrupted landscape. The impossible unfolding of events. The abundance of id. I will concede that the acting is basically incompetent. In a way, though, the wooden performances feed into the whole effect rather than detract from it. The two young actresses (both 14 I believe) playing the characters Rosie and Violet outshine by far all of the older performers. Daisy Eagan (Rosie) in particular is interesting. There is a subtlety and intelligence in her eyes far beyond anything the script calls for. That her character does not act with this same life I suspect it is all Daisy's and none of Rosie's. No matter. It is a boon to this movie. I'm not saying this is a great film. There are moments that make you cringe, both because of the clunky writing and because sometimes you simply feel sorry for the two young actresses. Some things in this film may push the edge of what is appropriate to ask a 14 year old to do in a movie. However, though you may object to that aspect (I do to an extent), that really has little bearing on whether or not it is a successfully told story. This same moral criticism could be leveled at The Exorcist (technically a far superior movie). Okay, you can't say you haven't been warned. However, because of the interesting, haunting feel of this movie, and the performance of Ms. Eagan, I rate this four stars.
