Now that Warner Brothers has recently given us "Fort Apache" and "Ballad of Cable Hogue" on dvd, we have only about 8 "necessary" westerns that beg to be released in the dvd format. These are "The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid", "The Gunfighter", "There Was a Crooked Man", "The Gray Fox", "Jesse James", "The Return of Frank James", "The Sundowners", and "The Culpepper Cattle Company". <br /> <br />"The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid" is one of the best crafted and excellently acted films you will ever see. It is such a shame that this truly great film is so little known. Robertson and Duvall turn in two knockout performances. Cinematography is simply fabulous. If you have a chance to see this, even on tape, do so. You will be very glad that you did. This film, along with the other seven above desperately need to be digitized and put on dvd--both for our enjoyment and their preservation. Perhaps a letter-writing campaign to Amazon.com requesting these titles might get the attention of the people who are the caretakers of these historic movies, and move them to restore and release them on dvd for us and for future generations.
Viewer Reviews In 1876 the Missouri State Legislature proposed a law to give amnesty to outlaws like the James and Younger gangs. The Pinkerton Detective Agency was out to kill or capture them. This drama is roughly based on true events, like other Hollywood History. This is entertainment. Its too bad such a lavish production was not more historically accurate. The James and Younger gangs were so well known in the Missouri area that they planned their next knockover far away where they were not well known. But this was to turn into a disaster because they did not know this land and could not make a successful escape when the citizens gave them a hot farewell. The Army and the Pinkerton's couldn't stop them, but the armed citizens of Northfield put an end to their robberies. This film shows one legend of Jesse James. He gave a poor widow the money to pay off her mortgage, then robbed the collector. Some say this legend goes back to Robin Hood. This film shows the new game of `base ball' (it combined the old games of rounders and town ball). Then a gold shipment arrived on a Sunday (no day of rest?), and other people decided to place their gold in the bank that has a new time lock safe. Another popular delusion concocted by advertising? They mention the new inventions of electricity and steam powered farm machines. On a rainy day they rob the bank. A passerby outside was shot, he didn't understand English. The people gathered their arms and many of the gang were killed and wounded. The telegraph sent the alarm all over the county and the state. The citizens gathered to chase and capture the robbers. Of course there was no lynching of brothel customers, and I doubt if there were mistaken attacks on another posse. They could identify each other by accent or knowledge. A posse captured the robbers, except Frank and Jesse James got away. Cole Younger plead guilty to murder and got life in prison. How a US Senator from West Virginia got him freed is another story. Years later Cole Younger and Frank James toured as attractions in a Wild West show. Cole Younger lived to 73 with a dozen bullets in his body. When the James or Younger gang would rob a bank in Missouri they would flee to Dallas for its gambling, saloons, and brothels. Easy come, easy go. But nothing lasts forever.
