Most directors use a hit film to launch an immediate career--but not Paul Brickman, who hit in 1983 with <I>Risky Business</I> then waited until 1990 to make this, his second movie. And it was a good, if overlooked one, starring Jessica Lange as a woman suddenly widowed and unable to cope. She moves her kids (including Chris O'Donnell in his film debut) from the suburbs to downtown Baltimore, where they develop urban survival skills much more quickly than she does. Most of the plot centers on her inability to open up to a man (Arliss Howard) who obviously is right for her--and on O'Donnell's improbable (but extremely funny) affair with a nurse who lives upstairs (Joan Cusack). Touching and funny enough that its lack of surprise won't bother you. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

This film is an overlooked masterpiece. Jessica lange, Joan Cusack, and Chris O'Donnell(in his film debut) are excellent, as is the entire film. It's very well acted, written, directed, and musically scored. Another screen gem languishing in the vault unreleased, to the detriment of audiences all over the world who are missing out on such a wonderful film. You'd think Warner Bros. would want to release it and make money, why they haven't is beyond me. They need to this year already, we've waited long enough. I'm so sick of going to Best Buy and seeing such putrid selections of lame films available on dvd knowing this film, as well as "Resurrection" w/ Elloen Burstyn, Sam Shepard, and Richard Farnsworth, are not able to be purchased on dvd. It's a crying shame and both Universal(anamorphic dvd's of "Psycho", "Somewhere In Time", and "Resurrection") and Warner Bros.(anamorphic dvd of "Men Don't Leave") should be ashamed of themselves for not releasing these classic, beautiful films in the proper modern format they deserve. I thought they wanted to make money, well they're losing out on quite a bit of it by not putting these films on dvd. Get 'r' done Warner's and Universal, enough waiting already, there's no reason for it.
