This bizarre little horror movie is set in the mining town of Valentine Bluffs, which may be in Canada, though the odd, indeterminate accents of the cast are perhaps meant to suggest that it is truly a regionless everyland. In a cruel twist of fate, the Bluffers have not celebrated Valentine's Day in 20 years due to a terrible mining accident. This year is to be the first return of the Valentine's Dance--repeatedly described by adults as the biggest event of the year--but someone (or <I>something</I>?) is trying to put a stop to the fun by delivering heart-shaped candy boxes with real hearts in them. The dance is called off in the name of public safety, the young (well, youngish) people decide to hold a party inside the mine instead, and if you think we're getting out of this one without someone getting a pickax through the chest, you have no business watching slasher movies. <I>--Ali Davis</I>

In the town of Valentines Bluff, the towns people are trying to move on and forget about their dark secret. A killer use to reappear on Valentines Day to kill the people who try to celebrate the day by throwing a party. 20 years have passed and the murders have begun again. The towns mayor begins to panic when he gets a valentine box of chocolates packed with a real bleeding heart instead.
My Bloody Valentine debut in 1981 when the slasher was beginning to gain some momentum. And even then, this movie had the fingerprints of several that came before it. Despite this, it really isn't that bad and is a pretty decent slasher.
The kills could have been alot better even for its time. Films like The Prowler which came out the same year proved you can push the envelope alot. The acting was very solid to me. And the characters had some fun personalities, I actually pulled out a six pack because of the characters. I found the plot to be pretty good even though a bit predictable. It has a nice set up and the soundtrack is pretty good.
I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this movie. Since I'm not that very big on gore and I'm more character oriented, plus I love a coherent plot. In which this does delivers. I'm satisfied with this now and I was then. I mainly recommend this to slasher buffs.
Also on a side note. There is a remake for this movie due out in January of 09. Now think about this. The movie is about Valentines Day murders but it's coming out in January. I don't know about you people. But to me, that's a bad omen.
