Elia Kazan made his directorial debut with this adaptation of Betty Smith's novel about a bright, young girl growing up in turn-of-the-century Brooklyn, trying to rise above her tenement existence. Sensitively filmed by Kazan, and graced with wonderful performances by James Dunn as the wistful, alcoholic father and Dorothy McGuire as a strong-willed mother. Viewer Reviews This is such a great movie. I am really surprised that it is not on DVD yet. As far as I can tell, Fox Movie Channel is the only network that plays it and that is not offered with our cable package. I would buy a couple of copies if it were on DVD.
