How long will truck tires last on top of molten lava? A surprising amount of time, apparently, according to this wild and wildly improbable disaster movie. Pierce Brosnan stars as a government geologist who shows up in a small Washington town to check out an active volcano, and in doing so gets in the way of the local-development agenda of the mayor (Linda Hamilton). Mother Nature soon levels the playing field, however, quite literally, as the pair and sundry kids and others try to keep ahead of the volcano's many spin-off problems. Roger Donaldson (<I>The Bounty</I>) directed, and if the film is remembered for nothing else, its special effects are unnervingly realistic, no doubt drawn in part from research into the Mount St. Helens disaster. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, director commentary, behind-the-scenes material, and optional French and Spanish soundtracks, plus optional Spanish subtitles. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Viewer Reviews
This was alright. If you have nothing else better to watch, this will pass the time quite adequately. This film came out at the height of the Hollywood Studios all taking advantage of the sudden interest in disaster movies, probably because special effects and visual effects were beginning to take off and they all wanted to experiment and the audience all wanted to see those things, or was just in the mood for cliched overly hyped entertainment with no heart or mind. Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton manage to do okay with what they're given, as far as the secondary actors and one liner actors, they should try acting, instead of standing there knowing they're being filmed, instead of pretending to be a character and forgetting the camera is there, because believe me it showed over and over. The absolute worst. Can the Director be blamed? Or the casting director, the actors themselves, or all of the above? Clearly they'll put anybody in a movie.
