This is a WW II movie that was made LONG after that war had ended and I think that the director lost the sense of that brutal conflict. The filmscore even attempts to make it a semi-comedy and the "funny moments" aren't really funny.

A band of British troops attempt to destroy a Japanese radio set which will aid an allied military activity elsewhere, but we never really get an actual sense of suspense. This movie is REALLY long too at 133 minutes. Twenty minutes could easily have been shaved from this one, given its content.

There are some good stars (Michael Caine and Cliff Robertson, the latter of whom seems off his game a bit), and a fine supporting cast of faces we've seen before in war flicks. Still, it just does not click.

The big picture here is that this is a "Dirty Dozen" ripoff, and it was actually produced with the popularity of that fine film in mind. Let me say without reservation that this is NO "Dirty Dozen".

This is probably a war film that you'll want to pass on. It has a real television feel to it, even though it's available in widescreen.

Viewer Reviews
Just finished watching this pro-war movie. I thought it was surprisingly good. The fake anti-war beginning gets taken over by the pro-war middle and end. As usual, you have the "i hate the army/navy" soldier/sailor, but in the end, their true heroism comes out. This is one of those movies that gives buddy war movies a good name. And pro-war movies. Cain and Robertson play off each other pretty good. I like 50s, 60s, & 70s Britiss actors just to listen to their accents(Burton, O'Toole, Harris, etc.) It's hard to imagine getting such a crappy mission with only 1 day before a 4-week leave period for Robertson. It is said that it had a message to tell about the Vietnam War at the time, but Robertsond and Cain play the "die for my country" heroes just with the right amount of cynicism and patriotism. Worth watching, at least once, to instill pride in the sailors and solders of the US and the UK during WWII and Vietnam.
