If you crave an over-the-top historical kung fu-fantasy epic with a good dose of voluptuous nudity, bravura machismo, and passions so intense they verge on ridiculous, then Brotherhood of the Wolf is your movie. Based (loosely) on an 18th-century legend, this French film follows a hunky scientist (Samuel Le Bihan, who's sort of a second-string Christopher Lambert) and his Iroquois sidekick/spiritual partner (Mark Dacascos) as they pursue a monstrous wolf ravaging the French countryside. Along the way Le Bihan gets entwined with a beautiful noblewoman (Émilie Dequenne) and a gorgeous prostitute (Monica Belluci) with secrets. The plot grows more and more incomprehensible, but the mix of torrid emotions, outrageous action sequences, and lurid titillation is really what the movie is about. Ignore the highbrow philosophizing and confused political intrigue; just enjoy the sensual images. --Bret Fetzer
Viewer Reviews This fine, elegant film surprised me; but it shouldn't have. After seeing three other such recent films from France lately - CRIMSON RIVERS 1 and 2, EMPIRE OF THE WOLVES - I'm becoming a real fan of their sophisticated, many-layered, extraordinary graphics and production quality and acting, writing and direction. For a film with such complexities and rich character development, it was exciting, engrossing and accessible (well-dubbed in english and spanish), BOTW kept me excited and guessing. Most of the time viewing it I was surprised, the plot spun and twisted and challenged while never confusing or frustrating. Reviewer' Libretio' said it all, and very well. I'll just add that references to kung-fu are abit misleading. The fights and action scenes are very well done, not reminiscent of anything I've seen. In all cases, they appear to be Real, from the moves to the blood. Overall the reality of this film is pervasive and 'way enjoyable. I wish I'd known of the three-disk Canadian version; jazzed as I am re this film I'd have liked to see more behind-the-scenes features. But the two-disk set was quite comprehensive, so I'll stand pat. Now Ima gonna go check out other french films. Adieu.
