Thank goodness I couldn't sleep and I caught this movie in the middle of the night. It is such a gem. It doesn't take long to find out that you are watching two stars, Oberon and Cooper, who could really deliver lines, but that those lines are singularly fabulous. The writing and directing are so far above today's common fare, that you quickly notice you're watching a really good film in the guise of an ordinary, simple story.
Viewer Reviews This is a classic. 'Coop' in the 1930's was one of the screen's most dashing leading men, and his convincing portrayal of a shy, sweet, rather naive cowboy who quickly falls in love with the sophisticated and beautiful Meryl Oberon (impersonating a maid in her mansion in order to go slumming and put the Coop at ease) is a fun story that will have you rooting for the young mismatched lovers from beginning to end. Dorothy Parker and Anita Loos helped Leo McCarey write the script, so it crackles with fun dialogue, and the character actors include the always great Walter Brennan (looking impossibly young), Patsy Kelly, and Harry Davenport -- even if you don't recognize the names, you will the faces, and they always bring solid performances to a movie. At times it can seem overly cute, but then, the movies of the 1930s can now seem innocent that way! If you profess to be a classic movie fan and are not familiar with the movie, you aren't 'there' yet!
