The video showcases English society by following the Bellamy family and its servants through the years starting at the turn of the century all the way to the end of WWII. The relationships between the family members, the servants and the family members and servants portray and reflect on the changes English society undergoes during those years.
The characters are well-developped, each representing a particular type of person with a distinct set of moral and social values, and distinct political views.
The show offers an often critical perspective on the changes in English society from a society predominantly shaped by its aristocracy to a society adapting to the rise of the bourgoisie.
The series is a well-done, never boring portrait of an intersting period in English and European history with excellent actors.
